Back in 2000 I bought Haha Sound because I liked the cover - wasn't expecting to get an all-time favourite band! I'm kind of a constant, global crate digger. I like new discoveries every week. Very few bands stay in rotation beyond a few tracks. But everything Broadcast ever released is treasured. Trish's voice was like nobody else's. It had and has a weird comfort to it that I can't really describe; maybe like the sound of the shipping forecast when I woke up scared in the middle of the night as a little kid, or like Oliver Postgate narrating the Clangers. I have never been so sad about someone I don't know.
I was widowed myself the year before last, with very little warning. He was my best friend and the better half of my brain for 18 years. The devastation and absolute unreality of everything is just not conveyable unless you've been through it. I mention this because, despite being a science nerd, a firmly non-woo person and not remotely 'spiritual', every single day since he died I have found myself saying: where are you, where are you?
